Valentine’s Day Tapas Menu | At Home Date Night Dinner

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day, February 14th is a day to celebrate love and indulge in some extra special treats. It’s also a day that is overwhelmed with cheap chocolates, tacky cards and overbooked restaurants. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I personally don’t want a heart shaped box of candies or a cliched night out–all I want is a nice home cooked meal and some snuggle time with my man.

There are few things that TJ and I enjoy more than cooking for each other at home. That’s why last year we decided we would stay in for a date night on Valentine’s Day and create a romantic dinner catered just for us. To add a little fun to it all we decided to give the evening a Spanish feel so we bought some tasty wine and planned a tapas menu.

I LOVE tapas. I love being able to try everything and not having to choose one dish for the evening (or afternoon if you’re having a pre-siesta lunch). You can have the salty, the sweet, the refreshing, the filling…and of course wine on wine on wine. So if you want a unique and romantic dinner for two this Valentine’s Day, stay home, pop open a bottle of red and get tasting!

Cheese Plate
You can’t go wrong with a good cheese plate. Because, cheese. I usually buy about 3 cheeses and try to mix up the consistency, age and stinkiness. Or avoid that (I recently decided I’m over bleu cheese). Add fruit and my favorite, fig spread!

Prosciutto Wrapped Melon
Pretty self explanatory. Pretty damn good. I’ll eat almost anything wrapped in prosciutto (see my prosciutto wrapped asparagus) because I love the saltiness and the smooth texture. It compliments perfectly with little cubes or slices of sweet, sweet melon.

Mushroom Toasties
This is a made up phrase for mushroom bruschetta. I love toasted bread-easy-and I love mushrooms so why not combine their magic. I love making a mix of mushrooms with herbs like thyme and rosemary then I add a touch of lemon zest right before I take them off the heat (that’s a trick I learned from Boqueria Restaurant in DC-Go there! Now! It’s one of my all time faves!)

Bacon Wrapped Dates
Again with the wrapping of salty meats. Just keep it going. Definitely different than the prosciutto wrapped melons but same idea of salty and sweet. You won’t be able to stop popping these in your mouth.

Meatballs
Albondigas! I love having meatballs as is. Just sauce me up and skip the pasta. Use beef, turkey, pork-whatever. Just make them bite sized and you’ll love the classic meaty taste amongst your spread.

Chorizo Stuffed Peppers
Add a little kick to your meal with these babies. We used the mini bell peppers (because tapas must be cute and little) and generally stuck to this Anne Burrell recipe. Just watch it with the red pepper flakes-a little bit goes a long way. If you’re not careful your boyfriend’s mouth will be so hot he won’t even be able to kiss you!

Blurry, pixelated photos-I KNOW-Major apologies! Understand that this was pre-blog and pre-new phone. This year the photos will be better!

It will be hard to top such an awesome spread for Valentine’s this year but I’m definitely going to give it a shot. Follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to see what we’ll be cooking up this year and feel free to share your ideas and meals with me too!!
